One of the most common questions I hear is, “Can I Afford This?”

My clients know that I rarely tell them NO when it comes to that question. I may encourage them to pause or wait on the purchase due to cash flow needs or timing, but I am not the gatekeeper for their finances. 

I mention that last part because early in my bookkeeping days, clients expected me to be that gatekeeper: the joy destroyer, or “Captain Funsucker” (yes that is an actual word according to the Urban Dictionary), and I often filled that role with enthusiasm.

Looking back, I now realize that it was wrong for me to take that power away from my client. Even though they were actively looking for someone else to pay attention to and make all the decisions around their money, that was really a sign that there was room for them to improve their relationship with Money. This was an opportunity for them to look further than simply whether or not there was money in the bank to do the transaction. Rather it was a chance to pause and intentionally pay attention to what goes on in their body, what their ego is saying, and what their money origin story is.

Side note - how we “do” money is how we do a lot of things in our lives. So think about that for a minute. I can definitely say, how I was doing money was definitely showing up in the energy of the team I was working with and how I was taking care of myself (or lack thereof).

Of course, I hadn’t healed my own Money relationship at that time, so how could I really step up and hold the space for my clients to do the same.

These days, timing and financing the purchase is not the only thing I encourage my clients to think about when that question comes up. In this very short video, I talk about the most important thing to consider, for any purchase, even if Money is ready to show up and support you.
